Winter Comfort from Across the Pond, Wednesday, March 2, 2022 6:30 PM ET
We New Englanders are certainly a hearty bunch, but did you ever wonder how some of our European friends satisfy their need for culinary comfort and keep cozy on cold, damp evenings? Let’s try a sampling of a typical winter weather meal from our friends from across the pond. We’ll start with Bangers and Mash, featuring braised pork sausages, served with creamy mashed potatoes and finished with gravy, from Germany, we enjoy Beef Rouladen served with braised red cabbage and buttery Spaetzle. Not rich enough? Barbara will teach us the ultimate comfort dish of Tartiflette, from France. We’ll finish the evening with a sticky toffee pudding just to make sure we are completely satisfied.
England – Bangers and Mash with Rich Caramelized Onion Gravy
Rich pork sausages braised, then roasted with gravy and served over creamy mashed potatoes. Great with a roasted vegetable or crisp salad alongside
Germany – Simple Beef Rouladen (aka the meal that “put a ring on it”!
A tasty dish of rolled beef round filled with smoky bacon, dill pickles, carrot and onion, seared and simmered in its own Dijon-beef sauce.
Braised Red Cabbage and Herb and Buttered Spaetzle
France – Olivier’s Tartiflette, a classic, richly satisfying casserole of potatoes, bacon and tangy cheese from my dear friend, simply served with a crisp salad.
England - Ultra- satisfying Sticky Toffee Pudding
