The Northampton Arts Council and Genuine Culture, LLC present Vibez for the Tribe II: A Celebration Hip Hop, Jazz and A Tribe Called Quest. Vibes for the Tribe will showcase the musical and spiritual connection between Jazz and Hip-Hop culture through the dynamic music of A Tribe Called Quest and the Jazz greats that influenced them, such as Grover Washington Jr, Donald Byrd, and Grant Green. The show celebrates 30 years since the release of the hip hop trio’s groundbreaking and universally-beloved album The Low-End Theory. The “Vibez For The Tribe” Band is led by Queens, NY native Nikhil P. Yerawadekar (Antibalas, Hailu Mergia, Low Mentality), and comprises some of his most trusted collaborators and features Brooklyn's own Yah Supreme in a prominent DJ and MC role. Over the years, Nikhil has been a part of many successful musical tributes, from theme concerts dedicated to icons like Paul Simon, David Byrne, and Aretha Franklin with Antibalas at Carnegie Hall, to musical directing four straight years of Fela Kuti birthday concerts. Yah's diverse experience in music, starting as an MC and label owner in NYC's rich late 90s/early 2000s independent hip-hop scene, has him very well prepared to move this crowd. A Tribe Called Quest's music plays a vital role in the soundtrack of these musicians' lives, and they can't wait to explore and interpret not only the Tribe songs we know and love but also the music that was sampled to make these hip-hop classics.
