Mountain Folders was founded in 2012 by Charlene Morrow and Sarah Pease on the way back from the OrigamiMIT Conference. They had such a great time and thought it would be wonderful to be able to fold regularly with others in our region, especially since there are so many dedicated and talented folders in our community. Mountain Folders began meeting monthly on a Sunday afternoon in the Mathematics and Statistics Department at Mount Holyoke College (MHC). Char was about to retire from the MHC faculty and Sarah is an alum so we have strong ties to MHC, and we were fortunate that the department was happy to make space available to us.
We almost immediately had a core group of 12-15 people who showed up regularly, even folks from Longmeadow (almost at the CT border) to folks from Turners Falls and north into VT and east into Central MA. We took turns teaching each other models and have never been lacking for activities to fill our 3 hour meetings.
We continued to meet in-person every month until Feb 2020 when the pandemic hit. Thanks in part to the generosity of OrigamiUSA we were able to switch almost immediately to meeting on Zoom, so we have been able to continue to meet monthly throughout the pandemic. In fact we now have between 30 and 40 people join us, and that includes people from all across the USA and several other countries.
