Entertainment + Music

Hailing from Athens, GA., of Montreal have carved their own niche -- establishing themselves as a band that thrills fans with compelling live performances, delights critics with their constant innovations, and continually showcases their musical evolution by drawing from a different set of influences for each album. Primary songwriter Kevin Barnes pours emotion -- heartbreak, frustration, elation, whimsy -- into lyrics that shift from adopted personas to invented alter egos to unobstructed views directly into his psyche.  The overriding genre remains the same — danceable psychedelic pop — but from one album to the next Barnes will leap into funk or house or old-school club sounds. On his most recent album, “White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood,” Barnes takes inspiration from ’80s club mixes — and also from the general insanity that is the modern day. (He’s said the album was heavily influenced by the shock and ensuing paranoia of Trump’s election).
