Northampton Neighbors and Northampton Senior Center Speaker Series Presents Henry Rosenberg MD and Ira Helfand MD: Long-time local, national and international activists working to abolish nuclear weapons. Discussing Back from the Brink: The Call. The Growing Danger of Nuclear War and What We Can Do About It." WHEN: Wednesday, March 11, 2019 5:30 - 7:00 PM WHERE: Northampton Senior Center, 67 Conz St. Free and open to the public. Talk in brief: The danger of nuclear war is growing as relations between the US and Russia, China, North Korea and Iran deteriorate and relations between India and Pakistan approach open warfare. Despite this imminent existential threat to human civilization, the issue is largely ignored by media and world leaders. Ira Helfand will paint a picture of the current peril and Henry Rosenberg will talk about the history and past efforts to prevent nuclear war. They also will offer suggestions on steps we can take action now on the grassroots level. "As a nation we need to understand that nuclear weapons do not make us safe; rather they are the greatest threat to our security and they must be eliminated before they eliminate us," notes Dr. Helfand. Bios: Dr. Rosenberg is a retired physician who practiced at Northampton Family Practice from 1983 to 2018. He has been a member of Physicians for Social Responsibility since 1980 and is treasurer of the Pioneer Valley chapter. He is a graduate of Columbia University (BA) and the University of Connecticut (MD), and board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. Dr. Helfand is a former chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine and President of the Medical staff at Cooley Dickinson Hospital and currently is an internist and urgent care physician at Family Care Medical Center, Springfield. He is a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and co-President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. He is also co-Founder and Past President of Physicians for Social Responsibility. He is a graduate of Harvard and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Drs.
