Moonlight Benjamin, named by the minister who adopted her after her mother died in childbirth, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1971 and grew up in a Protestant orphanage, learning how to sing at church. Now living in France, she is a voodoo priestess and a singer-songwriter with an impressive vocal range. Benjamin sounds thrilling, thoughtful and, at times, downright spooky… like a Caribbean Patti Smith. Her music is "Haitian voodoo inspired by the Black Keys, The White Stripes, Dr. John..." she says. It’s Haitian blues-rock, with stories of the spirit world and lyrics drawn from life in Port-au-Prince mixed in with the words of Haitian writers. All of it is dominated by Benjamin’s exhilarating voice.
