Giving Voice is a documentary portrait and audio storytelling project that delves into the realities of immigrants who have built a new life in the region. Through collaboration with ten participants who have relocated to the Pioneer Valley, Gardner creates a multifaceted experience. Each piece combines three elements:
A collaborative portrait between artist and participant.
An audio recording of a personal story chosen by the participant.
A handwritten portion of their story in their language of choice.
This layered approach aims to broaden the conversation around borders and belonging. By amplifying individual voices, the project sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of forging a new path in Massachusetts. Thematic exploration focuses on identity, family, community, and the resilience displayed by immigrants.
