Entertainment + Music
The GASPING WHITENESS ensemble returns to Northampton for the final show of a spring tour that has raised over $5000 for grassroots, POC-led arts, organizing, and youth development groups. GASPING WHITENESS is a play and community workshop exploring white supremacy's impact on parenting in progressive, middle class communities. It tells the stories of two families (one white and one African-American) and is performed as a staged reading by a cross-racial, cross-generational ensemble. The play runs one hour and is followed by a one hour facilitated dialogue, designed to explore how the themes of the play speak to our lives and our stories. The creative team includes playwright Will MacAdams and social justice educator/theatre maker Trenda Loftin (who co-direct and also perform in the piece); two child actors from Western MA, ages 10 and 12; and Atlanta-based visual artist Angela Davis Johnson, who created a mask and life-sized dolls for the piece. ___ 100% of the proceeds for the show will support the purchase of a house for black queer & trans freedom fighters, an effort coordinated by the reparations campaign of Western MA SURJ (Showing up for Racial Justice).
