Django in June (Friday)

Academy of Music Theatre (274 Main Street, Northampton MA 01060)

Music

Django in June is New England’s premiere event dedicated to the musical genre associated with the great French Gypsy guitarist, Django Reinhardt. During the week we bring together serious students of the style from all over. On the weekend the artists on our staff offer us all a grand finale on stage.

First up on our Friday double bill, Swing of France featuring Daniel Givone. SoF leads la contre-attaque du jazz musette by paying tribute to accordion giants who have left oversized footprints in the fields of jazz manouche. 2019 marks the 100th birthday anniversary of one such giant, Jo Privat, so you can count on an hommage his classic album, Manouche Partie.

Then we feature the Romane–DJM Quartet. As a player, composer and educator, Romane ranks among the most influential Gypsy jazz guitarists of his generation. This quartet pairs him with a central figure in Parisian Gypsy jazz circles, violinist Daniel John Martin. Two words – la classe.
