On November 4 at 5 p.m., Dr. Tiffany E. Barber speaks about the connection between W.E.B. Du Bois's pioneering data visualizations and Alma Thomas's luminous abstractions (currently on view at SCMA), and how they both visualize Black life beyond statistical reduction or representational constraint. Together, Du Bois and Thomas reveal how data can function as both evidence and imagination, expanding the possibilities of art, history, and collective liberation. Dr. Barber, Assistant Professor of African American Art at UCLA, is an award-winning scholar, curator, and critic. Public reception to follow.
