Barbie Diewald Choreography opens its inaugural season with Pare. Two years in the making, this forty minute dance work interweaves formal constructions and deliberate unraveling drawing from two primary experiences: Diewald’s personal loss of her childhood home in a fire, and the #metoo movement as a crisis point for women. Pare foregrounds intimate physical contact as a means both of reshaping trauma, and imagining alternatives to hierarchical relationships. Led by Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow Barbie Diewald, the company is comprised of professional dancers Jenny Bennett, Leah Fournier, Kate Martel, Katie Martin, and Sarah Lass.

Pare is directed by Diewald in collaboration with the dancers, and includes a live electronic score performed by local composer Jazer Giles. Additionally, high school senior Madison Baptiste, whom Diewald has taught since the age of 14, makes a guest appearance in the work. Pare was developed with the support of residencies at the Iron Factory (Philadelphia) and Banff Centre (Alberta, Canada), as well as a 2016 Artist Fellowship in Choreography from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
