Music

Acclaimed clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen takes a turn towards a more intimate sound with her latest ensemble, “Quartetinho” (pronounced “quar-te-CHIN-yo”). This new project brings together a group of virtuosos Cohen has collaborated with before, including bassist Tal Mashiach, pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, and vibraphonist/percussionist James Shipp, all drawn from her GRAMMY-nominated “Tentet.”

Cohen’s musical journey began in Tel Aviv, Israel, where she picked up the clarinet at 12 years of age. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, she moved to New York City, immersing herself in the city’s rich jazz scene. Throughout her career, she has become a bandleader known for her expressive virtuosity and captivating stage presence, winning numerous awards including multiple Clarinetist of the Year honors from the Jazz Journalists Association.

“Quartetinho” reflects a love for music in all its forms. The 2022 album “Quartetinho” features originals by Cohen, Mashiach, and Shipp alongside compositions by Brazilian greats like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Egberto Gismonti. This blend of influences results in a richly melodic and lyrical tapestry, with diverse timbres and intricate details woven into the music.

Cohen’s passion for music extends beyond performance. She is a dedicated educator, sharing her love for jazz and Brazilian music with students across North America. As she says, “Any day when I get to share music with people feels like a celebration to me.” “Quartetinho” embodies this spirit of sharing, showcasing Cohen’s musicality in a vibrant and intimate setting.
